Ankle Injuries

Pretty quiet ahead of the internationals today. Rio Ferdinand speaks, not a lot of interest, especially from a Man United perspective. Something on his injuries:

Ferdinand, 30 next month, described the various injuries that have limited his recent impact as "freakish", arguing that they are not an indication of long-term fragility. "I've never had a period like this before in my career," he said. "Each injury has been different. I haven't had a problem with my back since last season; there was my calf and I pulled my thigh muscle in training on the day before the start of this season.

"But I've been doing a lot of maintenance work, making sure my posture is right and correct. Simple things that are very effective."

Van der Sar has a few words on Foster:
"I have had sympathy win Ben," Edwin told M.E.N. Sport.

"I am one of the goalkeeping department and you work a lot each day with each other. Of course, you always hope that everyone does well. It is the same for Ben. I want him to do well.

"He has had a couple of unlucky moments but I am sure he is going to bounce back from this.

"I had similar things when I was young. That is what makes you the man and the player you become as a goalkeeper.

"Nobody has a clear path in their career. You go up and down. We all have moments like that. You have to just make sure that the downs are not as deep as the ones you go up.

"Ben certainly has the strength of character to overcome this that he has been through. He is a very strong guy. I have no worries about him.

"It is all down to him now and how he deals with it. That will shape the player he will be. But I am sure he can overcome it and become even stronger.

"But I do want my place back. Playing in the reserves on Tuesday was an ideal moment for me to get a game under my belt before the Premier League begins again after the international break. I needed a game."
Brian Reade in The Mirror lives in an imaginary world:
The apologists were out in force after Alex Ferguson annihilated Alan Wiley's professional credibility to distract blame for his own team's failings.
Out in force? Really? The only one I saw was Dave Bassett...
Transfer rumours: A Russian keeper:
MANCHESTER United are closing in on a £6m deal for Russian keeper Igor Akinfeev. The CSKA stopper is top of Sir Alex Ferguson’s list, with Edwin van der Sar 39 at the end of this month and increasing doubts over Ben Foster. Reports in Moscow say CSKA have given United permission to talk to the 23-year-old in the January window.

Manchester United have revived their bid to sign Valencia's £35million-rated striker David Villa. The 27-year-old is back at the top of the club's wish list, with Sir Alex Ferguson determined to get his man.

United thought they might land Spain's star of Euro 2008 last May by matching Valencia's asking price, only for Villa to stall as he hoped to join either Real Madrid or Barcelona.

But now, with the Spanish clubs investing heavily in other strikers, United hope he can be persuaded to join them next summer.

Finally, in the too-funny-for-words section - Tevez didn't move to City for the money. No way, honest...
