Tradewinds

More on the big story - Big Brother's Sophie and Ronaldo:
she was chatted up by hunky soccer ace Christiano Ronaldo but turned him DOWN despite confessing she fancied him in an interview.

She met the Portuguese Man Utd ace in a trendy bar in Alderley Edge, near their homes in Cheshire two months ago. She declined Ronaldo's advances - but later kicked herself for it.

Her pal said: "A friend said: 'He just went up to Sophie and said: 'You are my dream woman. I want you.'

"But bubbly Sophie was wary of his womanising reputation and snubbed him.

"Afterwards she kicked herself. If he asked her again now she'd probably say yes."
An interesting quote coming out of Liverpool today. Remember how Benitez basically said that they lost the league because we have more money to spend, and that we always have and always will outspend them (bullshit though all that was)? Well let's see what Liverpool are saying today:

LIVERPOOL have reacted bullishly to claims that they are on the point of financial meltdown by insisting they expect to be able to outspend both Manchester United and Arsenal in the transfer market this summer.

A senior Liverpool source told The Sunday Times last night: “We have more spare cash to spend than any club except Chelsea.” ...

Liverpool are not subject to some of the financial constraints on transfer dealings that limit Manchester United and Arsenal, who are more indebted to outsiders including banks and institutions

So there you go, even the club know Benitez talks rubbish. When Liverpool come up short next season I wonder who Benitez will blame?

In the build up to the England game we saw journalists falll over themselves to say how much better it was for Rooney to play for England, because he got to play through the middle, where he's so much better, than on the left where that nasty Sir Alex forces him to play. And so to the match reports, The Times:

England could not bring Rooney or Theo Walcott into the game ... Gerrard began drifting into the centre to do a better job at linking midfield than Rooney was doing ... a formation change, with Wright-Philips, Rooney and Gerrard forming a tripartite support for Heskey, with Gerrard more central, and finally England had control of the game

And The Telegraph:

The shrewd Italian tried two systems on Saturday night, a first-half version of 4-4-2 with Rooney playing off Emile Heskey and Gerrard mainly left before changing to 4-2-3-1. ... Gerrard and Rooney were swapping positions, Gerrard moving inside, Rooney selflessly darting wide.

I'm fairly sure these need no comment, except to wonder why they're praising Capello, rather than slagging him off, not using Rooney as a traditional forward? What a waste...

Nice description of Rooney's goal in The Times report:

England played some of their worst football under Fabio Capello yet won handsomely and scored one of their best goals of the modern era, courtesy of Wayne Rooney. It was like watching a room of monkeys bashing haphazardly at typewriters before one came up with a Shakespeare sonnet.

Rooney’s strike, acrobatic, alert, born of technical magnificence and competitive ferocity, will be remembered in highlights reels. Much of the rest of his side’s performance deserved the cutting room floor ... Leaping and turning in one movement, he sent a bicycle kick with his right foot back across the keeper and into the far corner of the net. For Rooney and his country 72 minutes of shoddy preamble was — just about — forgiven.

Not much else about. Tevez asks Maradona about where to play next season, according to The Mirror:

Carlos Tevez has turned to Diego Maradona for advice as he decides which side of Manchester his future lies on. ...

And the input of Argentina coach Maradona could now hold the key. Tevez has been back in his homeland preparing for the World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Ecuador. ...

Maradona has become a confidant for many of his players and a source in Argentina said: "All the players speak to Maradona when they have big decisions. "He is not just the national coach, he is their friend."

The Mirror also link us with Sheffield United's Kyle Naughton:

Sir Alex Ferguson has joined the chase for Sheffield United's £7million-rated whizz-kid Kyle Naughton.

Manchester United manager Fergie had brilliant young right-back Naughton watched in the Blades' 1-0 Championship Play-Off Final defeat by Burnley at Wembley 13 days ago.

And the 20-year-old Sheffield-born starlet did not disappoint.

A source revealed: "Sir Alex has kept tabs on Naughton, but was keen to see how he'd handle the big stage at Wembley.

"The reports he got were very positive. Kyle wasn't fazed and relished the occasion. He came out of the final as United's outstanding performer."

Phil Brown has launched a bid to bring back Manchester United striker Fraizer Campbell to Hull for £5million. ...

Boss Brown said: "It'll be tight as I know Stevie Bruce [Sunderland], Tony Pulis [Stoke] and Roy Hodgson [Fulham] are admirers."

And Carlos Alberto doesn't seem to understand the mechanics of global capitalism - and slags us off for signing Brazilian players.
